As we come to the close of this year, it is worth recounting some of the quotes from Jane Whaley. She is the leader of Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) in Spindale, NC. Yes, what she does reflects in truth more of whom she is rather than what she says or believes; however, these jewels of “wisdom” do give us reason to pause and reflect on the questions- Who is the Jane Whaley? How does she command such loyalty from hundreds of folks in this country and hundreds in other countries? After all, she had my attention for about 16 years. The last six years, I lived inside the group and witnessed many of the golden utterances in person.
“Your sin affects me!” This statement was uttered at a November seminar in reference to learning that an older lady in the church was gathering grocery papers from the local stores and sharing them with other church members. No one bothered to “check it out” with Jane and she exploded in a rage as she left the sanctuary. Just before she left she turned to rebuke this lady who was standing in congregation. After this blast from Jane, the lady crumbled in her seat and cried. The net effect was to warn others that WHATEVER they did, they needed to check it out with Jane since regular members could not determine what was sin and what was not… Jane only knew what sin was. Jane’s reputation in the community was/is precious to her. Does anyone doubt that? Here is the post about this to learn more… https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=143 (Bonus- in this post also explains the “sleep devil” that attacks members who can’t stay awake during her preaching!)
“Some of you parents are saving money for your children, God said to give it.” We mentioned this statement during the post about the $50,000 offering. Wow, some folks must have believed her. Jane cried after announcing that though she was only $25,000 short, God have blessed with $50,000… From such a group, this was sizeable offering. “I get a check for $600 each month from the church. I give Sam $200.” Yes, that is right. Jane sure knows how to stretch a dollar. For those who really wanted to know, Jane makes $600 a month. Really? A former member has told me in confidence that her total benefits were much more, you think? See the link here and the picture of the modest Whaley home on the 40 acre estate below. https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=277
On that note, Jane Whaley one time said, “If all my clothes were laid out – they would cover two city blocks!” It was not clear if the included her shoes and purses.
You girls look “homely”. Since I don’t remember the exact phrase, I will quote the main word- HOMELY. Jane called an entire senior class of girls – homely. Yes, her daughter said they all looked “COG”. Well, changes came after that! Ear were pierced, hair was poofed and bring on the French tips! No sir, none of her girls could stay “homely”. After all, remember, “Your sin affects me!” Being homely must be a sin, you think? In Jane’s kingdom, you must consider your appearance, Jane does. You owe $_____, when can you pay? One Sunday evening in December of 2007, Jane decided to collect some medical debts for a doctor in the church. Her daughter and the doctor’s daughter were in the room as she read aloud the amount that several people owed and asked them when they could pay. One lawyer in the church was shocked to find out he was in the room for his grandmother’s debt. He stroked a check and left in a huff. Obviously, Jane was breaking new ground in her ministerial duties… See the link here…. https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=235
“Everyone loves Jane Whaley and Jane loves everyone. If they don’t (love Jane) then they are listening to devils.” And along with that… “The love of God is the love of God.” Jane goes on to explain: “I love Sam and O____ (man in church leadership..) the same. It is the same love. I just show that love differently to Sam”. Does EVERYONE love Jane? Does everyone even admire Jane? Are there several folks that may be “listening to devils”? See the post here… https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=261
Some children get that “math devil”. Yes, there are “math devils” in her school room! Jane made this statement June 1, 2008 standing in the breezeway. She was talking to a visitor that came with me to the graduation ceremony that evening. Jane was telling how wonderful her class of four and five year olds was doing. Then she lamented that sometimes they get the “math devil.” In Jane’s world, there are lots of devils. Each one has a name and if you don’t know the name, ask her. She will tell you. While at WOFF, the entire list of “devils” that were named, I could not retell. There was the “video devil” for those watching DVD’s in their van… There were “ping pong devils” for that’s right, folks playing ping pong. Here is a quote from this post… Jane had said folks may have a “music devil” if the music occupies too much of their time or a “religious devil” if they read their Bible too much. There was a “control devil”, a “money devil”, a “foolish devil”… the list goes on and on and gets longer as Jane Whaley needs to demean another member in order to further her control over them and others. The Toilet Paper Revelation – Who can forget the meaningful revelation from Jane on the subject of toilet paper? Here is a quote from the post:
Jane then went on to explain that one day (recently was the impression we were given) as she was in the bathroom, she heard God tell her the right way to put the toilet paper in the roll. She said the right way is with the paper rolling over the top. “Do you want to know why?”, she asked. She said that there was less wasted, than if the paper rolls from underneath. Yes, we have all said things we regret or wish we could take back. Maybe Jane should get a pass on some of these quotes, then again, maybe not. Why? The reason is that she ACTS on these statements. She really believes that devils are everywhere and she teaches others to believe that. I know, since I was under her teachings for years! These statements confirm her actions! She is who these statements say she is- everyday. She is consistent. She teaches adults and children to believe that devils are everywhere. Ask her grandson. He has, at least in the past, confirmed his belief that devils can take you to hell. She teaches children that looking at Christmas lights in Ruth, NC can take you to hell. Whatever benefits her at the moment, is the path she takes. She is a calculating individual. She is an expert in controlling others. In my opinion, she is a danger to whoever associates with her or is around her for 30 seconds or less.
I will close with this. Paul Martin was the head of Wellspring Retreat. He worked with many cult survivors from many different cults. Paul Martin said that WOFF was one of the top five most emotionally destructive cults in America. See the post here.. https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=1570 Though I never met him personally, I have seen others helped by his work and trust his perspective. Soon, there will be another post on the work at Wellspring showing some folks who have been helped.
