Update: Charlotte Pastor and Wife Sentenced 9 yrs and 6 yrs for Tax Evasion
The link below is a Eyewitness Channel 9 news report on the Jinwright tax evasion case out of Charlotte, NC. We have posted updates in the past on this case and felt the case needed a follow-up. The former Pastor Jinwright received a sentence of 8 years and 9 months and will have to pay a $1.2 million dollar fine. Co-pastor, Harriet Jinwright was sentenced to 6 years and 8 months of jail time and fine of $1.1 million dollars. Below the video link is another link to more recent article form December 23, 2010 posted at qcitymetro.com.
From Qcitymetro.com: Harriet Jinwright to be hired as Greater Salem’s interim pastor.
In a recent article posted on December 23, 2010, “Greater Salem Church will hire Harriet Jinwright as interim pastor until the west Charlotte congregation can make other leadership arrangements, Qcitymetro.com has learned.” In another startling revelation: “The board member, Blease Turner, said the church also continues to pay a salary to Anthony Jinwright, who has been in the Mecklenburg jail since his May 3 conviction.”
There is no reason to doubt these statements; however, does anyone else see the irony in this? We have had several readers following this story. It is a concern as stated previously, not because there information to classify this church or its leaders as a cult; but, that so many people have been and still are involved in supporting these church leaders with many thousands of dollars in salary. The news report said there were several followers obviously disappointed that their leader had been sentenced. What was expected? Yes, “Miracle on the 8th” was on their shirts, but, who really believed that either Jinwright would be released without any further time served? What spell have the Jinwrights cast over their faithful followers? I have seen that kind of spell in my previous church life at Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF). Jane Whaley was good at casting spells- of fear. Is there any similarity?
This I believe is one of the saddest parts: “Greater Salem filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November after a California credit union began foreclosure proceedings on a $5 million loan that had fallen into default.” An obviously well financed church has had to file bankruptcy after their offerings dropped 65% over a period from 2008 to 2010. This is very sad for many members and non-members.
