During 2017, many new people became aware of the ongoing, complex and often surreal drama which surrounds Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF). This is a good reason to recap several important events which happened that brought much more attention to the often secretive and closed “church” in Spindale NC.

Starting February 27th, the Associated Press released the first of several articles which detailed abuses inside of WOFF. “Ex-congregants reveal years of ungodly abuse…” These accounts came from 43 survivors who lived inside WOFF and subsequently left at different times. The testimonials covered by this release and the subsequent articles throughout the year, resulted in a proverbial ongoing “indictment hearing” for the WOFF leadership as well as several local and State officials. The AP’s site (here) serves as the central hub for the many articles, videos and audio files unveiled after almost two years of investigation. The information gleaned from survivor accounts, court documents, recordings and intense research served to alert government officials and thus open several investigations into possible abuses, instances of fraud and wrong doings by WOFF in the United States and Brazil.

March 6th – “Ex-sect members tell AP: Prosecutors obstructed abuse cases“- was the next release which told of meetings inside Jane Whaley’s office where two members who served as Assistant District Attorneys in Burke County were involved in coaching members how to answer questions posed by various investigators. Also, present in these sessions was a church member who served as a social worker in Cleveland County. Not long after the AP release, Frank Webster and Chris Back were no longer employed as Assistant District Attorneys and Lori Cornelius decided to leave her position as a social worker for Cleveland County.

March11th – a Survivor’s Forum was held at the Spindale House. It was standing room only as several survivors told of their time inside WOFF. Several media outlets covered the event. The live stream recording received thousands of views on Facebook.

June 6th- A mistrial was declared in the State vs. Brooke Covington after the jury foreman introduced unauthorized documents into the jury room. The documents were judged as “tainting” any outcome. The jury foreman, Perry Slade was fined $500 and spent 30 days in jail. Mrs. Covington was the first of five WOFF defendants tried in the long running Matthew Fenner case. Judge Gavenus issued a gag order simultaneously with the mistrial. The gag order has been modified to allow an investigation by State officials into the events. As of March 31, 2018, the gag order will expire.

Later, a motion filed by Judge Marvin Pope moved four trials to Buncombe County. Also, in a more recent Motion filed by District Attorney Ted Bell, he requested an indefinite continuance. This Motion has yet to be heard. The reason for the delay includes the ongoing investigations by several State and Federal agencies into WOFF. (link here)

June 26th- AP released an article documenting local officials in Rutherford County delaying their initial investigation of Matthew Fenner’s abuse claims. Secret recordings of then District Attorney Brad Greenway and Sheriff Chris Francis document the confusion and delay.

July 24th, The AP released “<a href="https://apnews.com/52dc4fbe2fb64cec98740ad1e62b2115/"They-kept-us-as-slaves":-AP-reveals-claims-against-church" rel="noopener" target="_blank">They kept us as slaves…” an account of ex-members from Brazil telling of a “human pipeline” of young folks who labored in church-leaders homes and church-member owned companies for little to no pay. This account attracted the interest of a large news outlet in Brazil- Globo.com. This news outlet sent reporters to North Carolina to find out more. The resulting news release added fuel to the fire already started by the Brazilian and American AP. Later news reports told that officials in Brazil were taking the allegations seriously and were in touch with the U.S. Department of Justice.

August 21st- Congressman Patrick McHenry held a town hall meeting at Isothermal Community College. In answer to questions about his knowledge of the ongoing investigations into WOFF; he claimed to be ONLY able to make speeches and introduce legislation. He said he was a private citizen and not briefed about the situation. All of these comments were made in conjunction with reports of how he strives to help his constituents who seek help from several governmental agencies. He did not see the obvious conflict in his statements because his political life is based on “helping” those who vote for him. It was also noted his warm and personal greetings to each WOFF member who approached him after the meeting. (post)

September 25th- “…Church stoked tithing with unemployment scam…” As if the surreal religious subculture could hold no more secrets, the AP reported accounts of former members outlining what the leader, Jane Whaley, called “God’s plan.” The church-member owned businesses were told by the person claiming to be the voice of God, to file fraudulent unemployment claims in order for the tithes to continue and the businesses to survive. This caused many to shake their head in disbelief.

November 13th- During the early morning hours the AP released two related stories. One titled: “Ex-members say church uses power, lies to keep grip on kids.” The article outlined the process used by a long-time WOFF member serving as a county court clerk, Laura Bridges to bypass the foster care system and obtain custody of children from three single mothers. This article also included the Shana Muse story. It was a long emotional read, but extremely valid to understanding the WOFF saga.

Also, on November 13th,”Investigators face big hurdles in church child abuse cases...” a story was released outlining the hurdles to prudent child protection which local social workers face when investigating abuse claims involving WOFF children. The Compromised Settlement which was a result of the 2003 civil action filed by WOFF against the Rutherford County Department of Social Services (RCDSS) and three employees has served as a barrier since 2005. This story and the resulting public outcry resulted in calls for the resignation of RCDSS Director John Carroll.

Shortly after this article dropped, I sent an email to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) as they provide oversight for local DSSs. That very afternoon, I received a call from Assistant Secretary of the NC DHHS, Michael Becketts. He requested a face to face meeting to hear what I thought was going on in Rutherford County. This meeting was held on December 18th. In a closed door session with Mr. Becketts and Assistant General Counsel Julie Cronin, I expressed my concerns. They both listened and also expressed their firm position that the NC DHHS is not bound by the Compromised Settlement. Previous to this meeting, a new relationship protocol was put in place for RCDSS as they review complaints of abuse or neglect involving WOFF children. The NC DHHS will now review information and case files of all complaints of abuse involving WOFF children, those acted upon locally and those that are not.

December 14th- The AP released an article outlining the story of former WOFF-member- Jamey Anderson. “No one saved us…” Jamey told of his time on church discipline and the horrors that came with it. His struggles after leaving WOFF were punctuated by recent false trespassing charges filed by his brother who remained a WOFF member. The charges were dismissed, but not before Jamey suffered reputational damage. It was a sad comment on the legal process in Rutherford County.

This story was the appropriate ending to the year-long “indictment hearing” provided by the investigative team of the AP.

December 20th- The RCDSS at the monthly Board meeting heard from some folks during the public comment time who were not happy with John Carroll’s decisions. Also, several WOFF members crooned his praises. If he wore boots that day, I am sure they were shiny when he left.

During 2017, Spindale’s small town sleepy atmosphere was replaced with an ongoing intense cloud of disbelief and shock. Many local residents became aware for the first time of the abuses, misdeeds, and legal shenanigans which have festered and grown pervasive behind the lily white doors of the WOFF sanctuary. The sheen doesn’t always equal clean. The shine doesn’t mean all is fine.

In response to the growing information provided by the AP, Rccatalyst.com, WSPA, WSOC and other media outlets, WOFF teamed up with their radio pal – WCAB 590AM. Jim Bishop and WCAB have run WOFF member-owned business commercials for a while. This radio station has also served as a platform for WOFF-member Gilbert Carmona’s tax show.

WOFF pays for air time 8:30AM to 9:00AM – Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This started in December and except for this past Monday- the show has been live-stream on the WCAB YouTube channel. The shows are archived.

Let me take this opportunity to thank Karel Reynolds, Mark Morris, my ex-wife and my son for being so kind to review my book, “Locked in.” I know that does not mean you read it- freely. Nonetheless, you did tell the radio audience how much you think I “lied” in my book. This will only serve to make regular folks curious to read for themselves. I appreciate you getting the word out to the good folks who listen to radio. That is one media source I had not considered. Thank you!

And yet, the daily drama/trauma of WOFF-life continues…

What does 2018 hold as a follow-up?

The AP Investigation- Broken Faith has now posted audio clips under – “Voice from the Church.” The investigation revolves around testimonies of ex-members of Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF). The content of these testimonies has resulted in two Assistant District Attorneys- Frank Webster and Chris Back being “no longer employed.” Also, Lori Cornelius, Cleveland County Department of Social Services employee “resigning” as of March 17, 2017. Link also includes 14 stories from the Broken Faith Investigation.

List of clips include:

Jeffrey Cooper: talking about a meeting with Frank Webster’s comments included. Second clip about the roles played during the mock trials.

Jane Whaley: explaining her perspective on not reporting sexual abuse. A second clip of her casting dispersions on a 13- year old young girl who was molested during her time inside WOFF. Third clip of her loudly encouraging David Caulder.

Jamey Anderson: explaining a meeting with Jane, a second clip about the fear in daily life of WOFF.

Jay Plummer: explaining the abuse he experienced.

Tiago Cherubino: talking about an attack he witnessed.

Rick Cooper: explain how WOFF worked to shape its reputation.

John Cooper: he describes the consequences of speaking out at the church. Second clip about the restrictions on marital sex.

Danielle Cordez: recounting a failed attempt to run away from home. (gripping) Second clip explaining what is needed to end the abuse at WOFF.

Tim Cornelius: he describes a 7 year-old retelling the experience of being beaten in the classroom for daydreaming.

Thank you, to each and every ex-member who was willing to be interviewed by Mitch Weiss and the AP Investigative team. We have shared experiences which have shocked this nation and the international community. Not everyone experienced the same level of abuse; however, in some way, each member of WOFF goes through some type of abuse whether socially, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, physically or destruction of relationships with friends or family who decide not to join or express some contrary opinion about Jane Whaley, church practices or any aspect of this dangerous closed sub-CULTure.

Telling the secrets is one of the first steps to healing. I encourage all ex-members to continue on this journey of recovery. There is hope; it is a new day in the saga called Word of Faith Fellowship.

District Attorney for the 25th District, David Learner announced today that Assistant District Attorney Frank Webster and Assistant District Attorney Chris Back are no longer employed.
“I, along with my staff, have worked very hard in the past two years to rebuild the reputation of the DA’s Office, and I cannot allow the integrity of the office to be called into question.”

Thank you, DA Learner for stepping up and doing the right thing. Now, we can move forward with a serious and comprehensive investigation into all of the accusations uncovered in the AP investigation.

Thank you, Mitch Weiss for the many hours of digging through documents and interviewing survivors. The dedication of you and your team is paving the way for many survivors to share their story and begin the process of healing.

Survivor’s Community Forum March 11th 2:00PM

The Spindale House meeting room on the second floor will serve as the location for this forum. Survivors from Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) will be sharing information about their time inside WOFF and written questions will be taken from those in attendance. While some may come seeking the sensational, our purpose is to not lose sensitivity to the plight of each ex-member participating. Ex-members may attend and not be required to answer questions or reveal their personal information. A few have already agreed to be transparent about their experience.

For many in the area, questions about WOFF have been answered by rumor and misinformation. Many of the questions will be answered on Saturday by members who lived inside the mysterious group. I have declared openly in the last few days that recent reports have brought to light behaviors which warrant further investigation by local, State and Federal authorities. My hopes include tearing down the veil of secrecy which has surrounded this group for years and indeed decades.

Be aware that by attending the event, you give permission to be photographed, and recorded by video or audio devices. Email questions to author@religiouscultsinfo.com

Wednesday afternoon, the Associated Press reported that David Learner, the District Attorney for Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties has asked the State Bureau of Investigations to look into the allegations against his employees, Frank Webster and Chris Back, who are members of Word of faith Fellowship (WOFF). This stems from Monday’s AP article – here.

The most recent AP release went on: “Nathan Key, a spokesman for Learner, said in an email that Webster and Back will keep working during the investigation but did not say if they would continue to prosecute cases. He did not respond to follow-up questions.”

So is there “light duty” for an Assistant District Attorney? What exactly Webster and Back will be doing exactly during any investigation? It is not clear right now. How prudent is it to allow them to prosecute on behalf of the State when the allegations include betrayal of their duties?
How much of Webster’s annual salary of $93,600* will he be paid during any investigation of these allegations?

Likewise, for Mr. Back and his $72,800* annual salary? How much of that will the taxpayers of North Carolina have to pay while this matter gets settled? What is an ADA supposed to be doing at the office while his professional conduct and judgment are being investigated? What can the citizens of North Carolina trust Webster or Back to do? Please, let’s think of something if both of them remain working. This is a question for Learner. Or is it really?
(* latest figures for 2016)

A follow-up question is how many times, if any, has Learner visited Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF)? Has he ever been drawn into Jane’s aura? Did he have any idea of the intense loyalty required of Webster and Back to their leader, Jane Whaley, as members of WOFF?

There is no question in my mind of Webster’s and Back’s quality of work in their professional duties. From time to time, I have picked up the local paper in Morganton and read of their successes. However, this question goes to their conduct under the compunction to serve the “will of God” in deference to their duties to serve the citizens of their district. If these allegations are proven true, I credit it to the delusion which permeates the sub-culture of WOFF.

Jane explains it like this. There are facts and there is “Truth.” Truth is what she hears from God and facts are what non-spiritual people see. In WOFF world, Truth supersedes the facts. If a person was hit or pushed of shoved, that is a fact. In Jane’s world the facts are not relevant to her version of Truth which may be totally opposite of the facts. Frank, Chris and Cleveland County Department of Social Services employee, Lori Cornelius; from the accounts I read were helping children and adults see “Truth.” It sounds like this time, the facts did not agree with Jane’s version of what “she heard from God,” which in WOFF is the only “Truth” that matters.

In the understanding of the sub-culture, one must accept the above WOFF-logic and know the consequences if Frank, Chris or Lori had refused to obey Jane and helped the children see “Truth.” Jane would have turned on each one of them and at a minimum excused them from the whole charade as being full of devils and rebellious or worse, out of the will of God.

The key point in this whole scene, the blind loyalty to Jane blinded Frank, Chris and Lori and others involved in the process to seeing that they could ever be doing anything wrong. In fact, within WOFF, they were hailed as ministers of “Truth” helping others “walk in the will of God.” There is no ability to admit wrong when deep down they cannot recognize the convoluted logic of WOFF.

This WOFF-think also helps explain why in the answer to the AP Investigation- Broken Faith, WOFF issued this response, “We do not allow or condone abuse- in any form- at our church. Period.” They do not see their activities as abuse. The signature practice of loud, deliverance prayer and all that it has included in recent years; within that subculture cannot be labeled as abuse. In many cases, the prayer is abusive is a fact, but it is not the (WOFF) “Truth.” The leader of WOFF defines “Truth” regardless of the facts. Each member must accept it as so in order to continue living inside.

Understanding this conundrum will be a hurdle for any investigator on any level looking into any aspect of WOFF.

This morning as the birds are singing announcing the beginning of what promises to be a day packed with new information and drama, I sit amazed at the next AP Investigative release. Ex-Sect Members tell AP: Prosecutors obstructed abuse cases.

Reading the text reveals the secrets and definitive patterns which others on the outside have only speculated about for years. In video below, watch Danielle Cordez describe the treatment of Matthew Fenner! She says, “I honestly don’t know how he survived, I thought he was the first person they were going to kill.”

And with that video, the drama goes to a whole new level. Up until this point, Word of Faith Fellowship members have been doing damage control be sending out text messages telling relatives the accusations are all lies and that WOFF has “proof – videos and testimonies which we will probably be posting soon.”

WOFF denies abuse of any kind. And Jim Jones was a sweet harmless man.

From this morning’s release:

“Frank Webster and Chris Back — church ministers who handle criminal cases as assistant DAs for three nearby counties — provided legal advice, helped at strategy sessions and participated in a mock trial for four congregants charged with harassing a former member, according to former congregants interviewed as part of an AP investigation of Word of Faith.

Back and Webster, who is sect leader Jane Whaley’s son-in-law and lives in her house, also helped derail a social services investigation into child abuse in 2015 and attended meetings where Whaley warned congregants to lie to investigators about abuse incidents, according to nine former members.

Under North Carolina law, prosecutors cannot provide legal advice or be involved in outside cases in any manner. Violation of those rules can lead to ethics charges, dismissal and disbarment.

More egregious actions — including offering legal advice in an ongoing criminal investigation to help a person avoid prosecution — could lead to criminal charges, including obstruction of justice.”

And with those words, there is revealed the main issues behind the “freedom of religion” claim put forth by WOFF. There is the idea that religious freedom trumps the foundation and restraints of the law of the land. Now, Jane would never admit that, but it seems quite clear from this AP release. Inside WOFF, there is no law but Jane. And to the degree which she and her leaders hold on to that error dictates the chances of the “church” surviving over the next few months.

If they refuse to dethrone their leader, the end result will be not pretty. If the leaders and the followers will walk away from the notion of Jane as God, then the “church” may survive. The idea of reorganizing and renaming does not seem far-fetched.

Alas, the birds are still singing and the coffee awaits me in the kitchen. It is time to face the day. Let our emotions not run away from good sense.

On Sunday, I received a text saying Jane Whaley had her picture on page 16 of the New York Times. What? Details were not forthcoming and my efforts to find the treasure online proved fruitless. I refused to become a subscriber in order to possibly see Jane’s picture. Nope. This treasure will have to wait.

Monday, my search efforts were rewarded differently. There it was in an article titled- “Electoral Map Gives Donald Trump Few Places to Go.” by Alexander Burns and Maggie Haberman. The picture shows Jane Whaley, Leigh Valentine, Sam Whaley easily recognized. Also, with additional examination you see Frank Webster behind Sam and Josh Farmer to Sam’s right with his head down. I wonder if Robin Webster is standing to Frank’s left. Were there other members of the Trump groupies from WOFF? The caption did not list the names of course and it was taken a few days ago at a Trump Rally in Winston Salem, NC.

And yet my thoughts raced. What? Jane is not the center piece of the article? I was confused. There was not even mention of her efforts to promote Holocaust education with her traveling “Holocaust Museum”? No mention of her thriving Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) in Spindale, NC; a growing, loving, caring group of non-denominational Christians who endure “persecution” for exercising their religious freedoms? No mention. Not even a speck of ink about her Word of Faith Christian School and their academic superiority which every student exhibits (with a little help).

Actually, the article did not even mention Jane’s name! What how could there be such a mistake? You mean to tell me the New York Times had in their sights on someone who claims there is no other person on earth who has the revelation of God to the level she does and yet no mention of her purity, her wisdom, her prowess at knowing and giving “Truth”? How could there be such an oversight? How could one of the most recognized news organizations in the country have let this chance slip away? Was this an attack of the devil to ignore and overlook the most gifted vessel of holiness and wisdom to walk the earth since, should I say it, Jesus? If one listens to Jane describe herself, this conclusion is obvious, right? Who believes it? Well, obviously some still believe it since WOFF still exists.

As I inspected the photo several things jumped out. The expressions on the faces of Jane and Leigh show us each was in a state of abounding euphoric ecstasy. For Leigh, this giddy expression has been seen before as she stalked Trump and posted pics on her Facebook page as proof of her connection to a rising public figure. She has exhibited the ecstasy and no one is surprised. She is excitable like that.

However, the look on Jane’s face concerns me. She appears completely caught up in the aura of another. The “minister of God” who for years has refused to worship any man or woman, who refuses to put any form of idolatry not even a cross in her buildings, in her home or allow her members the freedom to have a coffee mug with a picture of a cat on it; appears to be wrapped completely in the excitement of the hour and magnetism of Donald Trump. She did whatever needed to be front and center to see the Republican nominee for president. This is not the first Trump rally she and her groupies have attended. We remember Frank opening the Trump rally in Hickory with prayer. Leigh was on stage and surely not in attendance without Jane or Sam.

Now, I would be remiss to pretend this is the first political figure or candidate Jane has placed her support behind. Dare we forget others such as Walter Dalton, Charles Taylor, Debbie Clary, Ramona Hall, Dan Good to name a few. Some candidates receive obvious support in the way of money, political signs, food for receptions; the support of others is cloaked in mystery. (a post for another day)

From the archives of their website, we read their stated purpose for engaging in political activities: “…to pray for those in authority.”; “… to get to know the candidates personally.”; “God led us to have a political forum and reception to get to know them.” The website went on to explain their persecution for sponsoring these activities, but openly declares the members “participated in voters registration, petitioned state and national leaders, attended and participated in congressional prayer breakfasts, and (our) individuals have volunteered in phone banks and political campaigns.” Adding, “National, state and local officials have visited the Word of Faith Christian School on numerous occasions to talk about government issues and topics.”

The “Political Outreach” page of their website ended with this admonition: “We teach our students at the Word of Faith Christian School and members of the Word of Faith Fellowship God’s mandate in Romans 13:17, ‘Let every person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction] and those who exist do so by God’s appointment… Render to all men their dues [Pay] taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, and honor whom honor is due.’ ”

So, what does the picture in the New York Times actually prove? In my opinion, this picture shows us again Jane and her inner circle is seeking any influence possible with a national political figure. The expressions on their faces depict a level of attraction rarely seen in times past. Is there any reason to believe Jane is so overtaken in Trump’s aura that for one minute she thinks someone else on earth is more worthy of adoration and praise? That, my friends is a hard one to call. Take a look at the picture yourself, notice Jane’s hand position and the child-like look of expectancy and joy. What do you think? Is there someone else Jane worships besides herself? She does have her happy face on.

As the next few days and weeks unfold let us not forget the declaration on their “Political Outreach” page; submission to authority and rendering dues, respect, taxes and honor. We might need to remind Jane and her crew of what they professed to live and teach their children.

(Bonus: I connected with Todd Heisler, the Pulitzer Prize winning photographer who took the picture in Winston Salem. He had no idea who was in his picture. He was admittedly “intrigued.”)

Yesterday, I spent about an hour talking on the phone to some new readers. In answering their questions, I found myself referencing certain posts. Unfortunately, I also realized these posts were in essence buried among hundreds of other posts and not easy to find. The solution has been to set up a page for vital links to previous posts of interest. The “Quick Links” page header at the top will take you to a page of links to previous posts grouped by subject. We start with survivor stores and at the bottom of the list are posts about the WOFF obsession with the Holocaust.

Today, I realized I had left off the post about the Mind Control Forum last year and have added that link. In the future, I may add other links or pages with certain themes. The Matthew Fenner case may one day have its own page. The story is about to explode again in the media on April 1st. Revisit this blog in the near future for other exciting news about the drama of destruction called Word of Faith Fellowship.
<![endif]-->(revised 01/15/2014)Tuesday night, I took a call telling me about a series of events that happened Monday evening in Rutherford County. I had to ask the person to repeat the scenario and then call the person involved to get clarification. What follows is a paraphrase of what was told to me. Former Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) member and adopted grandson of Jane Whaley, Patrick Covington was at a basketball game in the Rutherford County. Word of Faith Fellowship was playing another local church. Patrick walked in and sat away from members of his former group. A few minutes later, Lt. Leon Godlock, who was affiliated with the team opposing WOFF, approached Patrick. He had been talking to Frank Webster and his crew just previous to this. He said I can’t require you to leave, but, I am asking you. Patrick asked why? Godlock said that the WOFF team has said they will forfeit if you stay and my team really wants to play.

So, picture this, grown men saying that they will take their toys and go home if Patrick Covington stays in the building. GROWN men who say they are Christian were laying down the law so to speak, that if one person, who many of them had seen grow up inside of WOFF and had “prayed” for him and “helped” him “take hold of Jesus” and “helped” him get many “breakthroughs”… were telling an off duty Lt. Leon Godlock for the Rutherford County Sheriff’s department to convey their demands to get Patrick to leave a public place. If he does not leave— why we just won’t play! Wah, wah, wah…

Of course there were deeper dynamics in play here. Patrick is an ex-member who has experienced the shunning, emotional division and implosion of the only family he knew because he decided to not live inside WOFF. He represented something to the WOFF basketball team that none of them could admit was true. There is life outside their tight knit subculture. He represents the fact that when you leave WOFF you have the opportunity to explore the world God gave and learn new things and make YOUR OWN DECISIONS!

As the conversation continued, I understand that Frank Webster approached Patrick and Godlock. Frank Webster, he who would be judge over us, made the pronouncement to Godlock while pointing at Patrick that he had been “put on notice” and was told not to stalk WOFF members! As I understand it, Frank went on to accuse Patrick of stalking his sister in Wal-Mart! Patrick did not deny seeing his sister in Wal-Mart but, to be accused of stalking his very own sister in a public place where he had every right to be… does that seem like a true and complete assessment or could there be more to that story? Anyway, somewhere in this scene Godlock turns to wanna-be Judge Webster and tells him something to the effect to back up that he will handle the situation. The entire time Patrick was in the building was no more than 15 to 20 minutes.

Picture this; Frank Webster who put his hat in the ring in January 2013 to be nominated for an vacant judgeship position in our district has just made a big scene in a public place over the presence of an ex-member of his church. Now, I was not there and am only hearing one side. Frank, when Ray reads this to Jane and you hear about it, if you care to reply I will print your response —within reason.

Anyway, soon thereafter Patrick left the heavily influenced WOFF arena after making it clear to Godlock that his exit was not because of WOFF, but that he wanted Godlock’s team to be able to play since they were good. You may ask- who won the basketball game? I don’t know. Who thought they “stood their ground” and “set God apart” before the crowd, many of whom probably had no idea of the dynamics being played out? Do you think Frank made the decision or was his mother-in-law involved somewhere in that fiasco? Maybe Jane will call me and “give me truth.” Jane if you call, don’t use a blocked number. There are so many questions… Is this the kind of behavior we want on the District bench? One thing for sure, this whole scene shows Frank stands up for his beliefs…yes, that is true. Are his WOFF beliefs your beliefs?

Do you believe that if a member of a church leaves, that the remaining members should shun and cut-off all communication with them? Does that seem Christian? If a member of your church leaves family members behind, do you exhort the family members who stay to consider their family member who left- as dead? If the member who left requests some family pictures, would you shred them before you give them to him? I was told the loving members of WOFF did just that with Patrick’s pictures. All of this is what Frank Webster was standing up for and saying with his actions that he totally agrees with and endorses how Patrick has been treated. Way to go Frank!

The additional dynamic in play here was that Patrick tells me that Lt. Godlock has been to WOFF a few times to get prayer. He even brought his family to get prayer. If that is true, then consider these questions. When he went to WOFF did Jane assemble her “legal team” including Frank Webster to pray for him? If he did in fact go to WOFF for whatever reason, will he go back after this public display of high pressured control? Lt. Godlock, what say ye? Is this an accurate depiction of the events? Did Frank thank you for getting Patrick to leave? How did that make you feel? Did you feel like you were babysitting at that point? Lt. Godlock, is Frank Webster’s behavior fitting of an Assistant District Attorney?

Burke County residents, what do you say? Is this the kind of conduct you want from an attorney who is making decisions in your courts? Consider this, the laws of NC changed this year to allow candidates for a judicial position to receive campaign donations of up to $5,000 from any one person. That is up from $1,000 before the law changed. (source – http://www.wncvotetracker.org/hb-589-vivaelection-reform.html ) So, this may or may not mean that Frank Webster runs for a judicial position in the next election. I was told earlier last year he had stated he would run. If he does, many WOFFers could contribute much more to his campaign than in the past. If all this plays out in the next cycle, lets don’t forget how Frank stood his ground against a former member and threatened to take his team and go home if that person did not leave the building! Frank Webster effectively brought a basketball game in a public place to a halt over a regular WOFF practice of shunning former members – even though non-church members who did not even know Patrick would have suffered. Residents of North Carolina– is that the man we want to rule over us? Think about it. How would his loyalty to WOFF and his mother-in-law, Jane Whaley, affect his ability to be impartial?

On January 29, 2013, Frank Webster stood up in the McDowell County courtroom and solicited the votes from his fellow attorneys in District 29A. I know because I was there to hear the speech. He started out by saying he had been in Rutherford County for twenty-three and half years. He said he had been in Superior Court for six and a half years. He then went on to retell a story I had heard years ago about his first few months in the District Attorney’s office for Burke County. It was about the coffee table book with pictures from around “this great state.” In the front was an inscription telling how in just a few short months, he had gained “the respect of the defense bar and the law enforcement community.” Frank went on to explain the reason for the respect.

“There is a reason I have that respect. It is not because I give everyone what they want. But, it is because I actually care about people. I really care about helping people and I work hard to help people. And if you choose to vote for me, I will absolutely do the same for (district) 29A. And I would love the opportunity in 29A.”

Frank did not get nominated that day. But, this means I have more questions. If the same people who gave him the book knew about this public display on Monday evening, would the respect remain the same, increase or decrease? Next, how was Patrick helped here? How did Frank’s conduct show he cared about helping people? He showed how he had to have other non-WOFF members bow to his WOFF practices. Does that understanding give anyone concern besides me?

In my opinion, Patrick deserves an apology from Frank. He deserves a public apology. In my opinion, Lt. Godlock and his basketball team deserve a public apology. Which media outlet will pick-up Patrick’s story and run Frank’s apology? How would Frank’s supervisor at his job view the events that took place? Did anyone catch this exchange on video? Patrick’s public plight was not the focal point on Monday evening, even though it may have appeared that way. The main focus has to be where a man of such stature in the judicial community and one who has such far-reaching responsibilities, lowered himself to refuse to play a game, if he did not get his way. Frank- it is evident you failed the test. Selah.

On Tuesday, January 29, 2013, there was a meeting of the local District Bar to vote on nominees to refer to the Governor. He would then pick one person to fill the vacant judgeship in District 29A. Last I heard, there were ten names on the original ballot. As many readers know, Frank Webster was one of those names. In the previous two posts, I have voiced my questions and concerns. Today was the day when my concerns would either continue or they would be directed in other areas.

In the morning, I had a court date for work, as I had to visit the magistrate about a “complaint for money owed.” That was fairly uneventful, but, I took time to get my pictures of the courthouse not knowing what the afternoon would hold. I returned about 1:10PM and not to my surprise saw some familiar folks mounting the steps into the courthouse. When I parked, another group of attorneys was in front of me and I heard one say in a heated tone, “… and they want to tell me what my religion has to be!” I could not hear the rest of the remarks, but I thought that I was in the right place.

As I entered the courthouse and passed through security, it was clear that this meeting had many attendees. I decided to take a seat by the magistrate door and view the attorneys as they went by. There was no doubt I knew several of them. Time passed and I spoke to several people I knew. I also struck up a conversation with the magistrate I had visited earlier. He was pleasant and was fully aware of the proceedings.

By the time I made it into the meeting, the “elevator speeches” were almost done. One fellow was just ending and the director of the meeting called Frank’s name. He rose and stepped away from his seat to be better seen. Regretfully, I did not take notes right away and will not try to retell his speech verbatim. As I remembered from years past, he was well spoken and could easily be heard. Best I can remember he said he had been in Rutherford County 23 ½ years. He had been six and a half years on the Superior Court. He mentioned moving paperwork through efficiently and then listed many different kinds of cases he had tried. It was quite a list and I will not attempt to recount. Frank then began to tell a story I had heard before and not remembered until that moment.

The story was about him receiving a book as a gift after a few months on the job. His D.A. had written an acknowledgment to confirm that in a short time, Frank had earned the respect of the defense team and law enforcement community. As he told that story, I remembered back in the day when I heard it the first time. I was inside Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) and was aware that we were all to revere this acknowledgement. I have/had no doubts it was sincere and that his fellow WOFF attorneys were probably remembering the same service when it was first told. Frank went on to say that the respect he earned was because he truly cared about people and that he worked hard to help people. He closed with a promise to do the same in District 29A, if he was chosen. For certain, Frank was well spoken and could be heard all over the large courtroom.

The President then gave instructions for voting and pointed out the rules were available to be checked if needed. The ballots were marked and collected. It is my understanding though I did not view the rules, that there would be three rounds of voting as a minimum – if enough candidates got the needed majority votes. The district officers exited the room to count the votes. From there the room broke out in talking, laughing and “fellowship”.

Shortly thereafter, I struck up a conversation with the bailiff. I had heard him downstairs and he was definitely cutting up. Once up stairs, I expected the same thing. After exchanging cordialities as folks do to find some point of commonality, he took a deep reflective tone and said– this is an important election. I thought, buddy, if you only knew. I said it was important to all the citizens of the District. He agreed and stated he wanted to vote. Yes, I could tell he was serious. The bailiff appeared as if he needed to elaborate. He said he loved his job and had been in law enforcement thirty years. He loved his Monday through Friday schedule after working many twelve hour shifts and knew that this election would directly affect him.

After several minutes, the votes were tallied and the results announced. Rob Martel has been selected as the first nominee. There was some applause and the names of the four other candidates were announced. The names were David Norris, Jim Goldsmith, David Rogers and Michelle McIntyre. (if misspelled, please, forgive me) It took me a minute or two to realize that Frank had not made the cut for the next round of voting.

The ballots were prepared for the next round and the “fellowship” appeared just as spirited. David Norris was selected for the second position. There was applause and the final ballot prepared. As the meeting progressed, several folks expressed their versions of what may happen with the ballots and voting procedures, but, in the end the President ran the election. I feel sure if the rules were examined, it all went according to the rules.

Since I had other responsibilities, I left before the third round of votes had been counted. Later, I called back to be told that Jim Goldsmith had secured the third nominee position.

Since leaving the meeting, I have reflected on the last several days. What has been my message here? First, I have no qualifications to discern or assess Frank Webster’s legal training or knowledge of court procedures. As mentioned, I have no doubt he has been cordial and equitable in his dealings as I would expect nothing less. For that matter, I do not know the other candidates qualifications either. My point has been that, in my opinion, his involvement in WOFF cannot be ignored and had to be considered.

In reality, I have no way to measure if my message and concerns had any effect on the election. I did not do a complete interview of the voters. Since I do not know the other candidates, to say that Frank was bypassed because of WOFF would be presumptuous. I will not say that. I will say that the attorneys voted their free conscience and three candidates were selected. It would be safe to presume that the attorneys of the Bar could and would select the most qualified candidates to be referred to the Governor. After all, it is for sure, this election affected them as well.

We continue with questions that would help us in the vetting process for Frank Webster. The process is needed since Mr. Webster has put his name on a list of potential candidates for appointment by the Governor of North Carolina to an open judgeship in District 29A. The meeting to determine the three names that will be forwarded to the Governor will take place on January 29th at 1:30PM. If Mr. Webster secures enough votes, his name would go on the list. The Governor would select one person within sixty days from the list or the candidate with the most votes would automatically be appointed.

Why do I feel I am qualified to ask these questions? The answer contains two parts. First, I am a citizen of the District. How judges rule can affect all citizens of the District. Second, I am a survivor of Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) and have spent time in the group where Mr. Webster is considered one of the leaders. Some of these questions are pertinent to any survivor of the group. Questions about why and how I allowed the teachings and doctrines of WOFF to affect my life are ones I have been asking myself since I left the group in July 2008. Answers to these questions can help process and put in perspective the events inside WOFF. When I reflect on the intense influence and yes, control, that Jane Whaley has over members of WOFF- it is humbling to know how many years I spent there. Stepping back, I would suggest that it was my pursuit of religious enlightenment or fulfillment and subsequent trust of someone who I thought had acquired that, which brought me to WOFF doors. Was it the same for you, Frank?

Also, I believe that unless you have been a part of WOFF- you may not even know what questions to ask in order to discern or uncover the degree to which Mr. Webster has been or will continue to be, influenced by Jane and her teachings. If you have never been inside WOFF for any length of time, you will not know the inner dynamics, either how they were or how these dynamics can evolve over time. I may not be qualified to ask questions about Frank’s law education or legal training; but, questions about his affiliation with WOFF, I am comfortable with asking. Though I have never been a part of the inside leadership team of WOFF, I think my perspective is still valid, maybe even more so, since my life was definitely affected by the pyramidal structure of WOFF and all that included. We proceed and “…try to love the questions themselves…” Shall we continue the vetting?

Frank, considering the present questions and controversy about what has been called the fourth building or the lower building; where do you stand on issues concerning the fourth building? More specifically, how do you view the reported uses of this building and have you ever been relegated to living there? Do you agree to the purposes and practices reported in what has been referenced as a jail-like environment on the church property? Have you ever visited the building when it was in full use and witnessed any of the happenings reported by Michael Lowry? Did Jane ever ask you for any advice about the use and practices within this building? How do you view possible repercussions of the grand jury hearing of Mr. Lowry? Do you believe any of the reported allegations of Mr. Lowry? Mark Morris has been reported as one of the leaders over the fourth building and was named in the original complaint of Mr. Lowry in February 2012. Considering that Mark Morris is openly endorsing you and one would assume you converse quite a bit, does Mark ever discuss the happenings in the fourth building with you? If so, what do these conversations include?

From the McGee custody case heard in General District Court in Rutherford County- FILE NO. : 00 CVD 0686- FINDINGS OF FACT:

47. KT offered credible testimony related to mind control, excessive corporal punishment and blasting. KT taught in the WOFF school.

48. Ms. T testified that blasting was routinely used in school and in services. She testified that there was never an attempt to shield children from blasting during services. Blasting, according to Ms. T, was used to break the power of the devil and to deliver people from demonic possession. Ms. T testified that pink buckets were brought into services and that during deliverance services, those being delivered would be subjected to blasting and would vomit into these buckets.

49. Further, Ms. T related that when children and adults are subjected to blasting, they are held down forcibly, and that she has observed children shaking, kicking and screaming while blasting occurs.. (redacted and emphasis added)

Is it possible that Mr. Lowry was one of the children subjected to such a treatment during your time at WOFF even before the start of the fourth building usage as a “dormitory”? Have you ever witnessed what Ms. T related to the court? In your estimation, does this practice seem prudent or necessary for children and adult members of WOFF? If so, then how does that apply to others outside of WOFF? Is the practice described by Ms. T something you personally have participated in while at WOFF? Have you ever restrained anyone during a “blasting” session? If so, do you still personally practice such restraining activities?

Mr. Webster, do you agree with the practice documented here in court findings that young children at WOFF should be beaten to remove “homosexual devils?” Have you ever been a part of such activities as Mr. McDonald was cited for? From the McGee custody case heard in General District Court in Rutherford County- FILE NO. : 00 CVD 0686- FINDINGS OF FACT:

31. On at least one occasion, prior to 1995, a child of six years of age, within the WOFF, was disciplined by Douglas McDonald who struck this child at least15 times, leaving bruises and contusions. The child was physically injured and traumatized by this discipline, had difficulty sleeping following this incident and had to sleep on his stomach due to injuries sustained as a result of this discipline. This child was disciplined because the child was allegedly possessed by “homosexual devils”.

If you agree with the validity of such a practice, how could that affect your rulings in cases involving admitted homosexuals? Do you feel you bring an unbiased clarity and could rule justly on these types of issues, especially if they reflect crimes pertaining to any sexually perverse activities?

It seems prudent to ask if Mr. Webster has ever been involved in the security team of WOFF. If so, to what extent were you involved? If you were not involved, why not? Have you ever been on the overnight “watch” at the church? Has anyone from WOFF ever asked you about the placement of or legality of cameras and other electronic monitoring devices whether on church property or in private homes? Do you know of any recording devices in your home that would record video or audio of visitors?

What prompted you to recently change your political affiliation from unaffiliated to Republican?

Do you actively participate in the prison ministry employed by WOFF? What are your thoughts on convicted felons attending services and mixing with the congregation at WOFF? Are there any precautionary measures in place to protect regular members from possible violent relapses of former inmates? Do you sense any caution about relegating former prisoners who were convicted of violent crimes, to life in the fourth building?

The practices of WOFF include loud prayer, blasting, deliverance (as evidenced by the Inside Edition videos), shunning of ex-members, shunning of relatives who do not agree with WOFF practices; strict controls over media access for children, youth and certain adults in the congregation; strict adherence to many unwritten and ever-changing life-style rules, communal living, compulsory reporting of fellow members’ infractions to leadership, corporal punishment, public debasement of members who break these rules. Are you in agreement with and an advocate of all of these attributes of WOFF-life? Do you practice all of this yourself? How does the practice of shunning of ex-members affect you personally? Does it seem just to you?

Mr. Webster, it has been told to me that you were one of the leadership who handed out or sold condoms to those in the young married group. If that is true, how did you come upon those duties? If you were not directly involved, can you confirm such practices have existed within WOFF? When did this activity start and if it has stopped, when and why did that occur? How important was it for you to be so intricately involved in the marriage relationships of young married couples? Are you a licensed marriage counselor? Do you have any credentials that would recommend you as a marriage counselor? Did Jane announce strict guidelines for birth control and other personal aspects of the marriage relationship? Did you follow and advocate the following of such rules? Did you see your role as a leader in WOFF to include supervision or vital oversight of a couple’s private time? If so, why?

When Sam and Jane pass on, do you see your leadership role changing? Would you become more or less involved in the everyday decisions of members lives and of running WOFF? Would you then move for full financial disclosure which to date has not happened. Does the lack of financial disclosure to members even concern you? Do you see the lack of full financial disclosure as a prudent, advisable and a safe practice?

Are you involved in legal counsel for any of the WOFF-member owned businesses? If so, to what extent and have you been compensated for such counsel? If you have, would you disclose the names of such clients?

Mr. Webster, when you were accepted by the North Carolina Bar, you signed an oath to uphold the North Carolina Constitution. That Constitution includes Article 1 Section 13 which says:

Sec. 13. Religious liberty.

All persons have a natural and inalienable right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own consciences, and no human authority shall, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience. (source- http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/legislation/constitution/ncconstitution.html )

How would you answer former members of WOFF and those who peer into the group from the outside who say that membership in WOFF does NOT allow for the exercise of “a natural and inalienable right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their (WOFF members) own consciences…” And that by being a faithful member of WOFF; one is required to allow a human authority to interfere with or control their “rights of conscience”. Subsequently, is your allegiance to WOFF, Jane Whaley and the practices of WOFF in conflict in any way with the Oath you swore when being accepted by the North Carolina Bar? Please, explain your answer.

Mr. Webster, will you address these questions before the meeting on Tuesday when other attorneys are asked to vote for you? Will you join more closely with Jane and her religion or deny the extensive influence it has had over these last 20 plus years? Is it not simpler for you to withdraw your name from consideration? Please, either make your case and defend the questionable practices of WOFF or withdraw. Do not just dismiss the questions as baseless. These questions reflect valid concerns. Many in the legal community would not know to ask these questions.

Honestly, I realize Frank faces family destruction if he ever decides the WOFF gig is too much. He faces the same family implosion as other members have experienced, if he ever chooses to distance himself from Jane over open endorsement of WOFF/Jane worship. It is a heavy price to pay, and I am sure he loves his wife and son beyond measure. For those that say Mr. Webster conducts himself with the utmost professional decorum and is polite and equitable, I have no doubts. The question remains can we as citizens of North Carolina afford to allow a man who lives in very close proximity to such an extremely controversial, litigious, controlling figure have such a critical point of power in our court system? Does it seem in our best interest to allow this?

The questions will continue but, I suspect Frank’s answers will always be the same. He will defend WOFF and WOFF practices and Jane’s religion until the end. Who would expect anything less..? He is so deep into it. I write this post for many reasons. One of which is I just can’t agree to allowing him a position of influence all the while knowing his home/church environment is full of abnormalities, dangerous practices and questionable religious notions. Can one live in such a place as he does and not be adversely affected to some degree? What say, ye?

If you echo my concerns, please, contact local attorneys who will be voting in the meeting on Tuesday. Also, consider contacting the Governor in some form. The contact information is listed below. Thank you.
