Update – FLDS/Warren Jeffs- Videos

In previous posts, we have outlined the similarities between certain practices within the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) and Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF). My basis for these comparisons comes from documented accounts of survivors of FLDS and my own experiences from attending meetings and eventually moving inside WOFF. The time span for my experiences is 1992 until 2008. One of the first posts on this comparison topic was written January 19, 2010 and can be found here- FLDS vs. WOFF – The Similarities – Part 1https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=86  . I have learned much more since writing that post, but still agree with my conclusions at that time.

During this last week, Warren Jeffs, the leader of FLDS, has been in the news again as he is facing additional charges in Texas stemming from his practices within the FLDS. Frankly, I have been quite surprised at the coverage Jeffs has received from mainstream news sources. The first article tells how Jeffs fired his legal team on Thursday and the judge allowed him to represent himself.

Polygamist leader to represent self in sex assault case

SAN ANTONIO (Reuters) – Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs threw his child sexual assault trial into disarray on Thursday when he fired his defense lawyers and demanded the right to represent himself, which the judge then granted.  “It’s not as easy as it looks on TV, Mr. Jeffs,” State District Judge Barbara Walther told him. “You’re on your own.”

Then on Friday, the trial took another strange turn as Jeffs objected to the testimony of a witness and then proceeded for  50 minutes. The following article quotes Elissa Wall, a survivor of the group, and has video. There is also some concise background information that helps answer questions. (second video later in the post. It is cute.)

Sons of Perdition- Interviews with the Producers

“Sons of PerditionThe story of polygamy’s exiled teens. – is a documentary about three boys who had been a part of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (FLDS). We have posted many times before on the FLDS and its destructive nature. This post will link to an interview done with the film’s producers at the Tribeca Film Festival, earlier this year. The interview is in two parts and gives some insight into the struggles for the producers as well as the boys involved in the film. The subject of polygamy and the many effects it has on ones who stay inside and ones who leave are well documented. The producers, Jennilyn Merten and Tyler Measom talk very openly about not only what they learned, what they filmed, but how they took steps to become personally involved in the lives of their subjects over the four years in making the film. Jennilyn and Tyler are both former Mormons which helped them have a beginning in understanding the scope of the subject, as well as the trauma involved in leaving a group such as FLDS.

“Sons of Perdition” is presented by LeftTurn Films and is pleased to announce that the film has been acquired by the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).   The film will be presented as part of Oprah’s Documentary Film Club.  The link to the website for the film ishttp://www.sonsofperditionthemovie.com/Sons_of_Perdition_Home.html

Part 2

Here is a second interview done by Nick Gillespie of reason.tv with the producers. It presents a few different points about FLDS.

Welcome New Readers – This is a personal blog focusing mainly on my experiences while at Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) which is lead by Jane Whaley. The “About Author” page gives more information about me. I do encourage you to read and comment as you come across material that raises questions or sparks a memory. The list below contains three links to the first post in a series that will help explain WOFF, my experiences and what I have learned since my time ended in July 2008.

FLDS vs. WOFF – the Similarities Part 1 –follow the link here – https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=86

This information was posted January 18, 2010. It was the first of many to outline the similarities in the practices of Warren Jeffs of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) and Jane Whaley of WOFF.  An excerpt from the series:  It is amazing how well fear can work to surpress rational thought, something I unfortunately experienced over and over during my time in the church.” (page 99) (emphasis added by author- Brent Jeffs)

What Thoughts Helped Me Leave WOFF?? Part 1–the link here – https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=1396

After many years inside of WOFF, what were the thoughts and events that helped me leave. This post is from April 20, 2010. Entering WOFF was a process and so exiting was a process that took several months. Here is an excerpt, “There came a point where I was forbidden to be on church property. What happened that would cause me to leave the group all together?”

The WOFF “Don’t” List – Part 1–the link is here- https://religiouscultsinfo.com/?p=650

From the post of February 25, 2010, “Life at WOFF was full of “don’ts”. Some were spoken “don’ts”, others were supposed to be understood by example. If you did not catch on to the “don’t” in certain cases, you could be called out during a service or summoned to the office to answer why you did the “don’t” that you were not aware of doing. Does that make sense?” The series explains several of the “don’ts” and how or why they exist.

FLDS News Updates

We have been following the case(s) against Warren Jeffs. He was the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) until he was jailed on charges stemming from performing underage marriages between FLDS members. The link to the following article provides more background. It is important to note the number of convictions coming out of the state of Texas against several men from this religious cult. There are five convictions in Texas and the trial of the sixth man is in progress. It should not be shocking, but it is in some ways.

Arizona drops cases against polygamous sect leader

By Brooke Adams   The Salt Lake Tribune

Updated: 06/09/2010 09:18:40 PM MDT

A judge has dismissed two cases pending against Warren S. Jeffs in Arizona and ordered that he be sent back to Utah, a move that abruptly ends the state’s prosecution of the polygamous sect leader and potentially puts Jeffs on a faster track to face more serious charges in Texas….

Top Five Posts That Explain the Concerns with WOFF

The following list of posts will be the most concise way to help explain the issues with Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) which is run by Jane Whaley. This is in reference to the information known at this time. In the future, further understanding may come or events may unfold that would cause the author’s perspective to change. Remember, I write these posts after having been inside the group for six years close and the previous ten years to that, coming to many meetings. Until I moved into the group in 2002, my understanding was limited. Please, take time to read these posts and consider the information presented. Write with your questions or make comments after each post. I can be reached at author@religiouscultsinfo.com

Yet, as I review the posts already submitted, I see that the series on “Loud Prayer, Blasting and Deliverance” has not been completed. Installment number 7 in that series is coming soon… Also, I will begin posting about the wonderful WOFF website. So much material, so little time.

Misinformation Abounds

Today, I was made aware of several bits of misinformation about this blog and the circumstances surrounding its creation and support. First, I take no financial support from any other group for the expenses incurred in writing or promoting this personal blog. The Faith Freedom Fund does not contribute to the expenses incurred for publishing this blog. I actually donated the space they have on this blog to them. The content for their page met their approval, but they do not “approve” or direct beforehand the content of posts on this blog. The material in this blog, except in two posts as noted; (one by Faith Freedom Fund and one by Jerry Cooper)  is solely from my reflections, memories and observations. The line of discussion, content and order of publishing is entirely up to my discretion and choosing.

No one is forced to read these posts. No one is forced to believe or act on these posts. In several places, I note that the writings from my time at Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) are totally from my recollections and memories. My time spent in the group started in 1992 and ended in 2008. The first ten years, I was a member of a church in South Carolina that was a sister church to WOFF. Our trips from Greenville to WOFF increased over the years. In the beginning we were only coming for seminars.  I was not inside the church during the “Inside Edition” era, my information about that was filtered back through a few other folks. My memories are not perfect in every detail. However, certain dates and events are imprinted in a vivid way. Since we were not allowed to take notes during the sermons after a certain time, the content of sermons may not be in exact time order. (However, I have found some old notes and will be posting on them in the future.)

What They Did in Secret- Has Changed Their Lives..

FLDS Update: Another FLDS Member Sentenced in Texas.   Five men have been sentenced so far..   The deeds done in secret have changed their lives. The link below is about an FLDS member- Lehi Barlow Jeffs. This is from the Salt Lake Tribune on April 15, 2010.

“An FLDS man who was to stand trial later this month in Texas on charges related to sexual assault of a child and bigamy has pleaded no contest and been sentenced to two eight-year terms in prison.

Fifty-first District Judge Barbara Walther issued the sentences, which will run concurrently, during a hearing for Lehi Barlow Jeffs, 31, on Thursday in San Angelo, Texas….”

When will the vile filth of this FLDS polygamous cult be purged? The trial of Winston Blackmore in Canada has taken several turns..   In the article noted, Canadians may not end up paying the legal fees of the “broke” FLDS businessman.

Blackmore welcome, but reference case on anti-polygamy law can go ahead without him  By Daphne Bramham, Vancouver Sun  April 20, 2010

“The participation of Winston Blackmore, Canada’s most notorious polygamist, would be welcome in the reference case on the anti-polygamy law’s constitutionality, but the chief justice of the B.C. Supreme Court said Tuesday that it’s not necessary.

In a written decision, Robert Bauman said that not only is Winston Blackmore’s participation and that of his 500 or so followers from the community of Bountiful, B.C. not necessary, there is no reason for taxpayers to pay their legal costs of participating in the reference case…”

Update on Tony Alamo Ministries:

Alamo cites religion, wants appeal

Convicted evangelist says he deserves new trial because of judge’s beliefs

By: Lynn LaRowe – Texarkana Gazette – Published: 04/18/2010

“Tony Alamo contends he should get a new trial because the judge considered his own religious beliefs when sentencing Alamo to 175 years in federal prison, according to documents filed late last week.  ”

See the article with a picture of Alamo- here …http://tiny.cc/kuj73 Basically, the judge judged and gave him the maximum sentence on each count. Where is the problem?   See other articles in the rather bizarre tale by searching this newspaper site- here.. http://tiny.cc/5sc1m

In a very sad case, a Virginia man, James R. Boughton Jr.,   killed a Mormon and injured another. This was a tragedy. The 23 year old  man was sentenced to 38 1/2 years.
