Striving For Perfection and The True Gospel – C.A.R.M.

    Recently I was researching the teaching on perfection and its origins. I came across a source which included a post with the above title… “Striving for perfection and the true gospel”. The post can be found here… http://carm.org/striving-for-perfection . The site is run by the Christian Apologetics and Research Ministry. First, let me say I have not read everything on this site, everyone should proceed with caution and decide on their own about the material located there. However, the first article I found gave some very good points explaining the trap involved with the teaching on perfection in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Here are a few quotes…

“The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that its members are to strive to be perfect.  This perfection, hopefully, results in exaltation, in becoming a god.”

“As you can see, the Mormon is taught that he must triumph over sin, that he is saved by grace after all he can do, and that he must be perfect.  In fact, many Mormons have told me that the gospel is the Law and Ordinances of the Mormon Church, further verifying that forgiveness of sins in the LDS church is dependent upon the persistent and necessary effort of the Mormon to keep the Laws of God.” (emphasis added)

What They Did in Secret- Has Changed Their Lives..

    FLDS Update: Another FLDS Member Sentenced in Texas.   Five men have been sentenced so far..   The deeds done in secret have changed their lives. The link below is about an FLDS member- Lehi Barlow Jeffs. This is from the Salt Lake Tribune on April 15, 2010.

     “An FLDS man who was to stand trial later this month in Texas on charges related to sexual assault of a child and bigamy has pleaded no contest and been sentenced to two eight-year terms in prison.

     Fifty-first District Judge Barbara Walther issued the sentences, which will run concurrently, during a hearing for Lehi Barlow Jeffs, 31, on Thursday in San Angelo, Texas….”

    When will the vile filth of this FLDS polygamous cult be purged? The trial of Winston Blackmore in Canada has taken several turns..   In the article noted, Canadians may not end up paying the legal fees of the “broke” FLDS businessman.

“The participation of Winston Blackmore, Canada’s most notorious polygamist, would be welcome in the reference case on the anti-polygamy law’s constitutionality, but the chief justice of the B.C. Supreme Court said Tuesday that it’s not necessary.

In a written decision, Robert Bauman said that not only is Winston Blackmore’s participation and that of his 500 or so followers from the community of Bountiful, B.C. not necessary, there is no reason for taxpayers to pay their legal costs of participating in the reference case…”

Convicted evangelist says he deserves new trial because of judge’s beliefs

“Tony Alamo contends he should get a new trial because the judge considered his own religious beliefs when sentencing Alamo to 175 years in federal prison, according to documents filed late last week.  ”

      In a very sad case, a Virginia man, James R. Boughton Jr.,   killed a Mormon and injured another. This was a tragedy. The 23 year old  man was sentenced to 38 1/2 years.

    Well, with all the excitement, I could not be left out. Today,  after I had mailed my annual “friendship pledge” to Washington via Atlanta and another “pledge” to Raleigh, NC; I was feeling practically giddy. Every year, I get to confirm with the taxing powers that be, that I am their “friend”. Paying that pledge seems more painful as the years go by.

    While I was still giddy;  in my mail box was a nicely printed 4X6 postcard with Ramona Hall’s smiling face. Again, it was very good quality. (thank you, Ramona.)  At that, I was reminded that I missed the forum and regretted it very much. If any readers went on Tuesday night, please, email back your observations. An aside; the Rutherford County Board of Elections has scanned and posted the forms that candidates are required to file.      As I was making my way to the car, I looked across the street as two young Mormon missionaries were walking past. They turned down a side street and I was drawn to watch. Coming in their direction was an African American lady obviously headed to the post office. I wanted to see the possible exchange. Yes, it was obvious they had tried to speak to her. She would not look them in the face, kept her head down, arms a swinging and kept going. The reaction from her intrigued and excited me. As she crossed the street, I told her – “Way to go! Don’t give the the time of day!” She was sure to tell me that they had asked her where she lived? Wow, those young men needed a lesson or two in Southern etiquette. She was definitely not going to tell two strangers dressed in white shirts, dark pants, toting a backpack and the Book of Mormon- where she lived! Good for her!

Baptism of the Dead?

     Recently, in a short conversation with a co-worker; I noticed something very important about one religious cult group that would apply to others… Some how we ended up talking about the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.  I mentioned I had been there in the early 70’s. In order to demonstrate the excellent acoustics in the main temple area, a man walked down to the front while our tour group stayed near the back of the main seating area. He rubbed his coat sleeve and you could hear it from where we were. Next, he literally dropped a needle on a wooden surface and we heard it though we were several feet away! She exclaimed they did the same demo while she was there in the late 90’s! Some things don’t change.

     My family traveled out west one summer and spent several weeks in the mid-west and western United States. I asked her why she had an occasion to be at the Mormon Temple? This co-worker explained that she had worked for a large entertainment conglomerate with offices in the mid-west. She was an outside sales representative and responsible for one certain account in Utah, among others. This account was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints (LDS) or Mormons. The Mormon church was seeking help in digitizing the genealogy records that had been stored for years. The process was taking paper records stored in filing cabinets in caves and other safe places, as well as floppy discs and scanning/transferring them to CD’s in order to preserve the integrity of the information. Her company was a leader in the technology at the time.

     She talked about meeting with ten young Mormon men in a Board room and how stiff it became at times. Mormons are a patriarchal society and having to deal with her was apparently stretching their understanding. She said they were all polite and cordial, but still being stretched.

     About that time I asked her, “You know why they wanted to preserve the records, right?” She said no. I told her that Mormons practice the baptism of the dead. I told her they baptize dead people in proxy, so they can be a Mormon in the Celestial Kingdom. She was shocked! I sent here a link with a simple explanation. Resource on the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints (LDS)

      In order to more fully understand the seriousness of the similarities between the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) and WOFF; then you need a look at the background of FDLS and learn about LDS or Mormonism. The book, “The God Makers” (copyright 1984) written by Dave Hunt and Ed Decker is a thoroughly researched resource that looks at the background writings and doctrines of the Joseph Smith and Mormonism. You can find the book on Amazon.com.

     The reviews on the back cover are glowing. Here is one” “The God Makers” is an accurate account of theology, goals, and secrets of Mormonism. It is told in a popular, readable style with an eye to evangelism and apologetics. The facts are all here: it is the most useful and informative volume, valuable for both pastors and laymen.” Those words from Dr. Walter Martin, author of Kingdom of Cults

     The table of contents includes these chapter titles: “The Mormon Challenge”, “The Pagan Connection” and “Up to Godhood”. The footnotes are ten pages of notes of very tiny print. This work is well researched to say the least.   

     The way this book has come back to my attention will be explained in a future post. The words of Warren Jeffs stirred a memory of this book and some insights about LDS, FLDS and WOFF. The insight will be explained and the conclusions hopefully will make clear some of the issues at WOFF.
