Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief –HBO (Video)

A few of the comments at the beginning of this review:
“You feel euphoric…”
“I was deeply convinced that we were going to save the world…”
“JAW – DROPPING”- New York Magazine
“They sell it all in the beginning as something quite logical..”
“Going Clear should certainly rattle the walls, if not shake them to their very foundation… Variety
“You take on a matrix of thought that is not your own…”

This documentary is written and directed by Academy Award winner, Alex Gibney. The video is a review of the documentary and interview with Mr. Gibney by Chris Hayes on ALL IN- MSNBC. The documentary will debut March 29th. It is based on the book- “Going Clear”, by Lawrence Wright.

The alleged allegations of abuse carried out in the name of Scientology were shocking to me.

The Church of Scientology denies the claims with their statement including these words:
“This bigoted propaganda by Alex Gibney and Lawrence Wright is built on falsehoods by admitted liars.”

Alex Gibney is asked by Chris Hayes, “What is new in the film that people didn’t know about Scientology?”

“I don’t have any fear now” Katie Holmes (People Magazine)

Suddenly an urge to do what I don’t normally do- buy a magazine. In a rush in and out of a local store, my eye caught the cover of People® magazine. The cover dated November 10, 2014 had a picture of a woman I barely recognized-Katie Holmes. The caption-“I don’t have fear now.” (written by Kate Coyne) In a fit of giddy confusion, I grabbed the magazine and began glancing through it trying to verify my suspicions. Was this the ex-wife of Tom Cruise? The woman who ditched him because of his religion- Scientology? Pointing to the cover, I asked the clerk checking my out if this was the ex-wife of Tom Cruise- she looked as confused as I felt. “I don’t know.”

Laying the magazine down, I decided to chance it, “I will take it.”

Once in the car, I flipped quickly to page 52. Yes, this was the same woman. As usual, I was running late for an appointment, stuffed the magazine into the yellow plastic bag and decided to read it later in the day.

This evening, I settled in to read the article. Not sure what I was expecting, I am not a regular reader of this magazine. In fact, there were several celebrities mentioned who I no idea what made them famous. I live unconnected like that. Better than it used to be, but I am no fan of being a fan of the Hollywood types. My interest in this article rested solely in how it addressed her break-up with Tom Cruise and if there were any insights into how Scientology figured into the split. My hopes were only partially satisfied.

Scientology vs. Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF) (two videos)

Thursday, I had two text messages that came close to each other asking if I was watching NBC. I was not but, turned it on quickly to catch the show “Rock Center” with Brian Williams. It was riveting and in a way shocking to hear the survivors of Scientology recount their observations and then know how much they mirrored my life inside Word of Faith Fellowship (WOFF). Oscar winning director and writer, Paul Haggis left Scientology after 34 years. The segment had two parts. First was the interview with Paul Haggis- from which the video clips are shown.  The second part featured a family that talked of their ordeal to leave Scientology – as a family. We will comment on the interview with Paul Haggis first. There are two videos and I will comment on material from both, but maybe not in order.

From the outset, Scientology denies any validity to the claims of Mr. Haggis or the James family. They put out several statements attacking Paul Haggis’ claims as basically baseless and unfounded. He is labeled “The Hollywood Hypocrite”. We all expected that and are not surprised. However, I found Haggis’ observations believable, and at the same time frightening. To experience what I did inside WOFF and then hear that similar things go on in other groups is still bewildering. That is because while in WOFF, even though the ordeal was real, you still thought you were the only group who could have such dynamics affecting its members. In many cases, you thought you were the ONLY person being treated this way.
