Irene- “I tried to stay out of trouble…”

reading
Debby Shriver reading for her book

Wednesday, I attended a book signing in Asheville. Debby Shriver, author of “Whispering in the Daylight-The Children of Tony Alamo Ministries and Their Journey to Freedom” read from the book and answered questions. I met Debby several years ago. We share common interests in helping survivors of high-demand religious groups. It was an enjoyable evening as I met her husband and their dog.

In addition to providing the chronological understanding of Tony Alamo and his journey, Debby interviewed the children who were taken by authorities from the group in 2008. She gives them a voice. The insight from them is treasured because it is raw, real and provides understanding of the struggles for those who grow-up in control groups. This aspect of the book is very valuable.

I recommend if you have any connection in any way to a high-demand control group, whether that means you were recruited into one as adult, spent most or all of your childhood in one or have friends or relatives who are caught up in one- this book will help you. Debby interviewed over 300 people for this book. She spent countless hours writing and planning this work. You will realize this once you begin reading.

Today, I share an excerpt from the words of Irene. She was one of the children taken in the raid September 20, 2008. She shares several personal observations of her journey. The following is one I found included what I believe is universal trait for members of high –demand groups.

“When you are under the discipline of a sociopath, there is no such thing as a simple right or wrong answer. There isn’t even an “almost right” answer. If what you say doesn’t line up one hundred percent with what the sociopath wants to hear, then you are just wrong….

Update: John Kolbek Dies in Kentucky

 LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ)

(Link to article… http://www.wsaz.com/news/headlines/114171904.html )

“Kolbek died last Thursday of an apparent heart attack at a home in rural Lawrence County, Ky., just outside of the small town of Blaine.”

“Kolbek was the focus of a manhunt by the FBI since 2008, and was even on the TV show “America’s Most Wanted.” The FBI had an arrest warrant issued for Kolbek in Arkansas for allegations of beating two cult members.

According to the FBI, Kolbek was an “enforcer” at Tony Alamo Ministries. Alamo is currently serving a 175-year prison sentence for taking minors across state lines for sexual purposes. Witnesses testified during Alamo’s court hearings that Kolbek would severely beat members of the cult.”

We have been following this story with updates on Tony Alamo and his sentencing. Here is a link to an article from Rick Ross’ site form December 2009: http://www.rickross.com/reference/alamo/alamo126.html

Tony Alamo News  (website found here… http://www.tonyalamonews.com/

UPDATE: Since this site was first opened in 2006 many of the reasons for its existence have been accomplished. Its main purpose was to help stop Bernie Lazar Hoffman, aka Tony Alamo, from raping, beating, and psychologically abusing the young children whose parents are members of his cult. That has been accomplished; Tony Alamo was convicted in July 2009 of 10 Federal Counts of taking underage girls across state lines for sex and he is now serving 175 years in a federal penitentiary.

Blackmore welcome, but reference case on anti-polygamy law can go ahead without him  By Daphne Bramham, Vancouver Sun  April 20, 2010

“The participation of Winston Blackmore, Canada’s most notorious polygamist, would be welcome in the reference case on the anti-polygamy law’s constitutionality, but the chief justice of the B.C. Supreme Court said Tuesday that it’s not necessary.

In a written decision, Robert Bauman said that not only is Winston Blackmore’s participation and that of his 500 or so followers from the community of Bountiful, B.C. not necessary, there is no reason for taxpayers to pay their legal costs of participating in the reference case…”
